NOTICE TO IMPORTERS

IMPORTATION OF DAMAGED VEHICLES

Importers are reminded that Motor Vehicle Dealers are not permitted to import damaged vehicles of any kind.

Individuals may be permitted to import damaged vehicles for their personal use, on receipt of an import licence. At the time of submitting the application for the import licence, the Importer must:

•  Declare that the vehicle is damaged

•  Provide the Certificate of Title and other standard support documentation

•  Provide an invoice/Bill of Sale

Jamaica Customs is under no obligation to accept the invoice value of damaged vehicles imported by individuals.

Importers are also advised that motor vehicles imported in a damaged condition cannot be sold or otherwise disposed of within a period of three (3) years of importation.

Where full disclosure is not made, the import licence may be deemed invalid and the vehicle treated as an illegal importation by Jamaica Customs.

Importers are being warned of the consequences of purchasing damaged vehicles. Please note the following possible pitfalls:

•  The motor vehicle could have defects of which the purchaser is unaware, especially those that have water damage.

•  The cost of repairs could render the transaction uneconomical.
