The Importation of Newly Introduced Makes and Models of Motor Vehicles

The Jamaica Trade Board Limited wishes to remind certified motor vehicle dealers of Section 12.0 of the Motor Vehicle Import Policy, Ministry Paper 36/14, which refers to “Importation of Newly Introduced Makes and Models”. Accordingly, certified motor vehicle dealers desirous of importing new makes and models of motor vehicles for resale in the domestic market must first seek prior approval from the Jamaica Trade Board Limited.

The procedures for making an application for newly introduced makes and models of motor vehicles are as follows:

  1. Submit a written application to the Jamaica Trade Board Limited detailing the specifics of the new makes and models of motor vehicles to be imported.

  2. A manual and technical specification detailing the specifics of each make and model of motor vehicles. If a contractual agreement between the manufacturer and local dealer representative exists, this must be submitted along with the application.

  3. The importer must import a demonstration unit of each model to be inspected and tested by the Island Traffic Authority. (This approval will be granted after The Jamaica Trade Board Limited has reviewed the application above.)

  4. The Island Traffic Authority (ITA) will submit a written report to the Jamaica Trade Board Limited indicating the recommendation for suitability of the unit for importation.

  5. Based on the report submitted by ITA, the decision of the Jamaica Trade Board Limited will be communicated to the applicant. If the outcome is favourable, the applicant will be required to submit a copy of the contractual agreement between the manufacturer and local dealer representative (if it was not submitted in item 2 above).
