Despite the many complaints from businesses about having little to no access to export markets, data from the Trade Board Limited (TBL) shows that while a number of trade agreements exist, most are underutilised.
Director of export at the TBL Joan Butler told theJamaica Observerthat of the 11 trade agreements to which Jamaica is a party, the nine managed by her entity is found to be marginally used. The other two the CARIFORUM-European Union (EU) and CARIFORUM-United Kingdom (UK) economic partnership agreements (EPA) that falls under the control of the Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) also reflect minimal usage.

The Jamaica Trade Board Limited (TBL) has been making a positive impact with its ‘Step-Up Export with Trade Agreements’ initiative, which was launched in May 2022.
The project has two overarching goals, which are to promote the benefits of the nine preferential Trade Agreements/Arrangements managed by the entity and increase awareness of the underutilised/inactive agreements.
These Trade agreements can provide various benefits, such as reduced tariffs, streamlined customs procedures, increased market access, as well as helping companies increase their competitiveness and reach new customers in foreign markets.

2023-06-23Jamaica Trade Board looking to identify and resolve Jamaica's export issues
The Jamaica Trade Board says it is looking to identify and resolve issues surrounding exports from Jamaica.
Retired Major Dr. Hugh Blake, Trade Administrator and Chief Executive Officer at the Jamaica Trade Board, said the agency has established a "4-E" strategy.
The strategy is based on four pillars intended to educate, enable, expedite and evaluate.
Major Blake said the board is also setting key performance indicators, which have seen a 95 per cent efficiency index.
He said he expects these efficiencies to help boost local exports.
